π Welcome 2023
The last month of 2022 was packed with AI news, driven most notably by ChatGPT and the surrounding buzz.
π¦πΉ Austrian AI Landscape 2022
In December the Austrian AI landscape, an overview of the Austrian AI ecosystem covering startups, corporations and research institutions, received its annual update.
A few key findings:
growth rate slowing down to 10%, in line with developments in other European AI ecosystems. For the first time startup attrition is contributing to deceleration.
very high share of public funding for startups, private investment rounds for local AI startups are still significantly lower value compared to other EU countries
massive uptake in female founders, reaching almost parity in 2022

πΆ New Grant programs
New grant programs for AI projects are launching soon by aws - Austria Wirtschaftsservice and the FFG - Austrian Research Promotion Agency as part of the "AI Mission Austria" initiative. Start-ups, SMEs, and large companies can apply for funding in different stages and focus areas, including "Trustworthy AI", "Explainable AI" and "Edge AI". Keep an eye on the aws and FFG website for more updates. Meanwhile, the FWF - Austrian Science Fund has already started their own funding program for basic research in AI in a variety of fields with β¬1.9 million available. Stay tuned, more details will be provided in the next newsletter.
